Sen. Bill Cassidy’s recently proposed discussion draft to reform the 340B Drug Pricing Program marks the most significant congressional effort in more than a decade to increase transparency, strengthen oversight and ensure the program better serves the vulnerable patients it was originally designed to help.

Cassidy’s proposal deserves serious consideration. But its greatest value may be that it highlights a broader reality: 340B is one manifestation of a healthcare business model whose incentives increasingly work against affordability, accountability and long-term sustainability.
