Recent activity in Washington—from the Patients Deserve Price Tags Act now moving through the Senate, to the House Ways and Means Committee hearing with Hospital CEOs in April—illustrates that dissatisfaction with the current state of healthcare delivery continues to grow.

While pricing and affordability are the most visible part of that dissatisfaction—and addressing them is a step in the right direction—the same fragmented business model that drives up costs also makes it nearly impossible for hospitals to reliably hand a patient from one caregiver to the next. Healthcare leaders should treat care coordination as another business model failure to confront, since closing that gap will take structural redesign rather than more staff on the floor.
