PharmaVoice Interviews Numerof on Purdue Pharma Settlement

More than 900,000 Americans died as a result of the opioid crisis, and the family behind Purdue Pharma made more than $10 billion marketing a drug they knew was addictive. Now, after years of litigation, the Sacklers will pay roughly $7 billion in settlements.
The one bright spot is the creation of Knoa Pharma, a nonprofit successor that will ensure the critical medicines Purdue still produces will continue to be available, and will direct its efforts to addressing public health challenges related to the opioid crisis. Managing Partner Michael Abrams shared his thoughts with PharmaVoice on Knoa’s formation, and the long-term repercussions of Purdue’s actions.
This is as bad as bad behavior gets in the business of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Knoa Pharma is a heartwarming step in the right direction, but the settlement as a whole sets a terrible precedent for accountability in the industry.
