David Cordani built Cigna into a national powerhouse through aggressive growth and acquisitions. But the next phase under incoming CEO Brian C. Evanko may be less about expansion and more about reassessing which businesses fit strategically long term.

In an interview with Health Payer Specialist, Managing Partner Michael Abrams shared his thoughts on Cigna’s evolving strategy.

I think they want to be in the services business because it’s a smoother business. You don’t have the same risk exposure, you don’t have the same spikes. You don’t get as many surprises. It’s more predictable, it pays well, and it’s scalable

The question now is not whether Cigna stays in insurance — it’s how much future growth comes from services businesses adjacent to insurance itself.
