This week, hospital executives testified before lawmakers on rising healthcare costs. The hearing highlighted that it isn’t just individual decisions driving up costs but is a predictable result of misaligned incentives across the system.

Managing Partner Michael Abrams told Chief Healthcare Executive that the hearing called attention to a number of problems.

At the core, the healthcare system still rewards volume over value. What hospital corporations want is more patients, to whom they deliver more services, for which they are reimbursed as generously as possible.

Abrams also pointed out the sustained resistance to site-neutral payment reform and stronger price transparency requirement, noting that both threaten core revenue drivers.
