Writing the Correct Management Development PrescriptionThe value proposition of the training function is that it increases the capacity of the employee base to be more productive and to perform their roles more effectively. Unfortunately, in most organizations the amount of truth in this promise is anybody’s guess. The value of the training function and its curriculum, no matter how elaborate, is only as credible as the demonstrated linkage between the content of that training and the performance of those who are trained. In most organizations, this is a matter of faith.
Much has been written about the need to evaluate training to prove its value. This is one way to demonstrate a causal connection between training and performance. But training evaluation is not the only way to prove the value proposition. The other way is from the ground up -- by empirically linking content to the roles of those to be trained based on critical job competencies.
